Protect Individuals’ Right to Dignity at All Times, A’Ibom Chief Judge Advises Journalists

The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Honourable Justice Ekaete Fabian-Obot, has charged journalists to always respect and protect the right to human dignity in the discharge of their professional duties.

Justice Fabian-Obot gave the advice yesterday Monday February 2, 2026 while receiving the State Working Committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), led by its Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, on a courtesy visit to her chambers in Uyo.

In her remarks, the Chief Judge stressed that the dignity of an individual must never be compromised or traded for any reason, regardless of the circumstances. She emphasized that journalists, as the image and conscience of society, must uphold the highest standards of professionalism by verifying facts, hearing all sides to a story, and exercising patience when challenges arise in reaching concerned parties.

According to her, defamatory reports have the potential to erode confidence, damage reputations, and undermine public trust.
“I am delighted to receive this delegation today. I encourage you to remain true to the teachings and etiquettes of your profession, because professionalism is the hallmark of an excellent practitioner,” she said.

Earlier in his address, the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, extolled the Chief Judge’s motherly virtues since assuming office, describing her tenure as impactful and reform-driven. He commended her contributions to the judiciary, particularly in the areas of infrastructural development, speedy dispensation of justice, improved decency within the judicial system, and enhanced welfare for workers in the third arm of government.

The chairman further sought improved synergy and partnership between the judiciary and the media through regular engagements, noting that such collaboration would help foster a more progressive society. He also appealed to the Chief Judge to consider capacity-building initiatives for journalists who specialize in judiciary and crime reporting.
